How to be perfectly "suited"

May 22, 2017

Every man deserves to have at least one great suit!

While choosing a suit, one should understand how the costume is built and understand what differentiates a suit from another in order to be able to make the proper choice for his body.

Before making any purchase, it would be great to have someone take your measurements in order to know which drop suits you better!

A drop is the difference between the jacket and the pants’ widths. The jacket width is measured at the widest point of the chest whereas the trouser width is measured at the natural waist; the narrowest part of the body between the ribs and the hips. The most popular drops are 6, 7 and 8. (6, 7 or 8 being the difference in inches between the chest and the waist).

6 is usually for the American styles, whereas most European styles with a fitted form have a drop 7. Your body does not necessarily have to have the same mentioned sizes, however, you chose the closest drop to your measurements and your pants can then be slightly altered one to two inches in or out to have them perfectly fit.

Now that you know your drop size, u can choose your preferred suit material; the most common being wool, cotton or linen. Bear in mind though that Wool is by far the most popular choice due to its soft fabric that feels good on the skin and lets in plenty of air. It keeps you cool when it's warm outside, but also provides warmth when it's cold, making it a versatile choice that fits any season.

(You can always opt for the cotton choice, however please bear in mind that if you do, you will need to press your suit regularly since it will wrinkle and will not give you a professional look or a linen choice if you would like a more casual look).

A typical 4-season wool suit comes in several levels of quality, called super 100s, super 120s and super 150s, the higher the number implying a higher quality. For instance, a super 150 drapes well, does not wrinkle and when it does, the wrinkles fall out quickly.

Now that you have chosen the material, we can discuss the color! With Navy blue being one of the most popular colors, you can always go for different hues of grey and black that are also good choices.

You can also go for a more interesting choice by opting for a less dull option and go for a check or stripe pattern, or even have an edgy look with a non-traditional choice of color; Your choice!

Last important element before making a purchase is the buttons on your suit’s jacket! If you opt for a single-breasted jacket, which is the most common choice, you will need to understand the difference between a one, two or three buttoned jacket.

A one button jacket is not very versatile and gives a very retro look. Double buttoned jackets are the most classic and modern style, they also look good on all shapes and sizes; this would be your safest choice as long as you wear it with the top button buttoned only! Three buttons suits were previously very popular and are regaining popularity in the past years however make sure if you opt for this choice, to button the middle button or the two top ones only. Want to be fashion forward? Why not opt for a double breasted jacket with 4 buttons, it is coming back in style and gives a very slick and edgy look especially for young people who want to make an impression. Not a “too professional” option though!

Now that you are ready to make your purchase, make sure to set your suit up with the right shirt and tie to have great look and look absolutely stylish.

Lastly, bear in mind that your suit will need maintenance in order to preserve its quality; do not dry clean it too often because the chemicals and the steam presses will destroy its natural fibers, instead, please use a suit brush and clean it whenever needed. If your suit gets stained in one place or another, clean the stain instantly and always make sure your suit is hanged carefully.
